Billings Reservoir & Recreation Area : Billings, MT
Currently in design, the Billings Reservoir & Recreation Area will transform two former gravel pits into a 300-acre public destination on Billings’ west end. This project will secure the city’s water future with twin reservoirs designed to provide up to 40 days of emergency supply and triple the city’s population capacity under existing water rights.
The plan features a greenway with trails, a connection to Billings' broader trail system, boardwalks, ADA-accessible fishing piers, a sand beach swimming area, shade shelters, restored prairie, wetlands, picnic areas, and an event pavilion. Native habitat restoration will support local wildlife, while outdoor classrooms and interpretive elements will offer hands-on learning opportunities focused on water security and ecology.
This innovative project will reclaim a post-industrial landscape to benefit both the community and the environment, providing Billings with a vibrant year-round destination for recreation, education, gathering, and connection.
